Theresa’s students have used Mindsets Challenges to immerse and explore the real-world use of math through authentic situations faced in the world of work, in the community and as part of every day living. For example, in the Where to Work Challenge, Theresa & her students debate the differences — and similarities — between tech giants Amazon and Google. They go on to discuss careers and through Mindsets, they receive job offers at each company. Students then use linear equations and graphs to help them analyze the offers and decide which one is the best for them.

In the Baseball Bonanza Challenge, students use their skills in area and costings to determine the most cost effective way to collect & ship baseballs to send Puerto Rico to help the hurricane relief effort and get sports back up & running.

Rocky Hill Country Day School. The school’s vision is for students to be doing and becoming, emphasizing process over product. As a post-content approach to education, the school and teachers inspire each student to become navigators, critical thinkers, citizens, and communicators, who are innovative, self-aware, ethical, and globally-minded.

Students’ take on real-world experiences, meaningful coursework and research, discussion-based classrooms, and individualized and collaborative learning opportunities in all divisions. Believing fully in the mind-heart connection, Rocky Hill weaves social/emotional development and wellness into the everyday fabric of the community. Students find themselves not only well prepared for college academics and personal independence, but also for wherever their life’s journey takes them.
